About this app

SKRITTER - THE WRITE WAY TO LEARN CHINESE AND JAPANESE

Remember every character you learn. Most Chinese apps ask you to recognize Chinese characters. Skritter asks you to write them, because writing is a proven way to make a character stick in your long-term memory.

When you write a character, you recall every part of it, so the next time you see it, you really know it.

Self-studying or taking classes? Learn Mandarin Chinese with HSK, TOCFL and textbook word lists, in simplified or traditional characters, with pinyin or zhuyin (bopomofo).

✍️ WHY WRITING MAKES CHARACTERS STICK
In Skritter you recall each Chinese character (hanzi) in full, stroke by stroke, with instant feedback on your stroke order. This active recall is why our learners remember what they study.

🧠 REMEMBER EVERY CHARACTER YOU LEARN
Our brains are actively trying to forget what we learn each day, so we combat that with our spaced repetition system (SRS). Your Chinese flashcards are scheduled for review just before you forget them, so you practice what is slipping. Study smarter, not harder.
Daily reminders keep the habit going and stop reviews piling up. A few minutes a day keeps you on track, and over months that adds up to thousands of Chinese characters.

🎓 TEST PREP: HSK AND TOCFL
• HSK vocabulary for the new HSK 3.0 levels 1 to 3, with more levels added as they are released
• Every HSK 2.0 vocabulary level, plus the earlier HSK 1.0 word lists for learners on an older HSK syllabus
• TOCFL decks

📚 STUDY YOUR OWN TEXTBOOK
We cover popular Chinese textbook series used in universities, schools and language centers, chapter by chapter. Find your textbook, jump to your chapter, study this week's hanzi tonight.

⚡ SKRITTER FEATURES TO POWER UP YOUR LEARNING

• Tone practice cards to help you consolidate your Mandarin pronunciation
• Learning tips and character breakdowns from expert teachers
• Readings, definitions and audio

🈶 TRADITIONAL AND SIMPLIFIED CHINESE
Learn Mandarin with traditional or simplified Chinese characters, or both, and read with pinyin or zhuyin (bopomofo). Many Chinese apps handle only simplified and pinyin.

🖊️ THREE WRITING MODES AS YOU IMPROVE
Your handwriting practice should get harder as you improve, and you can turn writing off entirely if you would rather drill readings and meanings.
• Default: strokes snap into place as you write, with hints when you are stuck. Ideal for your first characters.
• Raw squigs: no stroke snapping, so writing feels like pen and paper, with stroke recognition still on.
• Rawest squigs: no hints, no automatic grading. Write the whole character from memory, then grade yourself. Just like a classroom quiz.

I have been learning Chinese on my own for many years, but my reading and writing proficiency only really improved after I started using Skritter. The app has the option to choose between traditional/simplified characters, and bopomofo/pinyin. The only downside is that the app is quite pricey and can be slow and buggy. However, a recent bug was solved quickly and efficiently (when customer support came back to work after the weekend!) so over all I am happy enough to give a 4+/5 star review.

I would give this 6 out of 5 stars if I could! A fantastic app with so many lessons and videos. I've been learning Mandarin for a few years now but avoided learning how to write it as it felt overwhelming. However, I reached a point where lack of understanding of characters/radicals was holding me back in progressing my ability to read - with this app it's really fun to learn and in just a few weeks I've transformed my ability to read, write and retain tones I usually struggled to remember ❤️

Exceptional UX gets me looking forward to playing the game of learning. Phenomenal custom content of three inner workings of characters names it a breeze to learn new characters after the foundations. Clever system to separately test tone, writing and Pinyin so you can know where you are weak. Great mnemonics and explanations of all beginner characters. Only improvement I can think of is having some form of sentence mode. Or a fully Chinese mode so you do not need to think in source language.
