About this app

How can computers learn to recognize birds from sounds? The BirdNET research project uses artificial intelligence and neural networks to train computers to identify more than 3,000 of the most common species worldwide. You can record a file using the microphone of your Android device and see if BirdNET correctly identifies the probable bird species present in your recording. Get to know the birds around you and help us to collect observations by submitting your recordings.

BirdNET is a joint project of the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and Chemnitz University of Technology.

Brilliant! It's the Shazam of the bird world! We love the Birdnet app in our house. It's really enabled us to learn about different bird songs and different calls and to confidently identify birds in our area. After Instagram, this is probably my most used app. Occasionally there are times when it can't identify a call, but it's usually due to too much other notice (wind, cars etc) or no internet connectivity.

I have been using this app for years and thought I'd finally review it. I've learnt so much about birds and birdsong from it! Not only is it very accurate it's also brilliantly organised, you can see all your previous observations, save recordings, share recordings of birds on WhatsApp or elsewhere, and follow links to Wikipedia entries about the bird you've identified. No annoying ads, simple to use and really fun. Thank you so much to the makers of this app, I can't believe it's free!

Wow! A really helpful and accurate app for identifying birds from their songs. Once you've got used to how it works, its easy to use and quick. We hear far more birds than we see. With this you will know what they are. Even their 'wild guesses' are usually correct. Warning! It does not suggest birds that are not common to the geographical position where you are using it. Brilliant!
