You know how to say “important” in Chinese. How would you tell someone “Your opinion is very important to us”?
Build on your Mandarin with Chinesimple, Khanji School’s app for learning Chinese. In the HSK 4 course, you’ll practise expressing your point of view, understanding someone else’s and explaining what matters to you. Explanations in English help you choose the right words for what you want to say.
A FAMILIAR WORD, A CHANGE OF PERSPECTIVE
You might already recognise 重要 (zhòngyào), meaning “important”. Now read 你的意见对我们很重要 (“Your opinion is very important to us”). Notice 对我们, meaning “to us”. The speaker is saying that your opinion matters to the group they belong to. What would you change to say “Your opinion is very important to me”?
Here’s another example: 他一直坚持自己的看法 (“He’s always stood by his own views”). This time, you’re describing someone else’s stance. Read both sentences aloud and think of a situation where you might use each one.
LISTEN: WHOSE OPINION IS IT?
Listen to a native speaker say the first sentence. Whose opinion is it? Who does it matter to? Listen again and see if you can pick out 你的 (“your”) and 对我们 (“to us”) without looking at the text.
If you’re unsure about a word, look it up in the Chinese dictionary. Listen to how it’s pronounced, use pinyin as a guide and read an example before listening to the whole sentence again.
MAKE THE SENTENCE YOUR OWN
Think of someone whose opinion you value. Change 对我们 to 对我 (“to me”) and say the sentence aloud, as if you were telling that person how much their opinion matters to you.
Some words are easy to recognise when you read them but harder to use yourself. Add those words to your flashcard deck. Spaced repetition helps you revisit them over time. If you mix up two characters, look at the stroke order of one of them, try writing it and find it again in the sentence.
PICK UP WHERE YOU LEFT OFF
Move on to the next course module or spend a few minutes reviewing. Daily practice suggests what to work on next. You can track your progress and see how many days in a row you’ve studied.
PREPARE FOR HSK 4
Planning to take the HSK 4 exam? Practise with vocabulary, sentences and exercises at this level. Read or listen to each of the two sentences. Whose opinion is it, and what does the sentence say about it?
