KID-SAFE

Seek does not require registration and does not collect any user data by default. Some user data will be collected if you choose to sign in with an iNaturalist account, but you must be over 13 or have your parents permission to do so.

Seek will ask permission to turn on location services, but your location is obscured to respect your privacy while still allowing species suggestions from your general area. Your precise location is never stored in the app or sent to iNaturalist unless you sign in to your iNaturalist account and submit your observations.

Our image recognition technology is based on observations submitted to iNaturalist.org and partner sites, and identified by the iNaturalist community.

Great app for so many good reasons. But there is one big issue. If you lose network connection, which can happen a lot when you're out in the wilderness, you find so many things you want to record, but it will not upload. This leads to frustration and potentially not using the app. It works so well and is so rewarding to use when you have network connection. It desperately needs a way to store sightings and photos to upload later. That's a win/win. More records from more places. PLEASE SORT 🙏

Good, but not perfect. This app does a great job of identifying species, but does seem to rely on a decent mobile signal, which is something that can't be relied on in the locations where you want to use it. Best for stationary objects like plants as it's rarely fast enough for anything else. Worryingly, it does make mistakes and has wrongly identified poisonous plants. There is currently no way of correcting mis-idents, so the AI will be machine learning errors. Don't rely on this app alone!

Great when it works. The most frustrating flaw is instant amnesia. It will 'detect' a species for a split second, then rather than then giving you some breathing space to get your photo and log your find, it will return to deep uncertainty. Seems like this would be an easy thing to fix -- just program it to 'stick' once it's made an ID, with the option to reject that ID if the user thinks the app has made a mistake.
